Thread veins, otherwise known as spider veins or telangiectasia, are very fine dilated veins situated just beneath the surface of the skin, very often on the legs. It is essential that patients with this problem undergo a full consultation and medical assessment to ensure that there is no underlying condition causing them.
The treatment of choice for these small veins is usually microsclerotherapy.
A solution, called a sclerosant, can be injected into these veins, causing them to disappear without creating any damage to the main supply of blood to the legs or skin.. The procedure is effective, safe, relatively pain free and does not require an anaesthetic. More than one microsclerotherapy treatment will be necessary to achieve a satisfactory cosmetic result. Treatment does not prevent new veins appearing.
For thread veins that are present on the face, often around the nose and on the cheeks, IPL Photorejuvenation may be advisable in conjunction with, or even instead of microsclerotherapy.
